v class="coffee-description">

Our relationship with Mahder Birhanu began in 2019, marking one of our first direct-trade partnerships in Ethiopia. Alongside her sister Hirut, Mahder has spent more than 20 years in coffee, building a business rooted in quality, opportunity, and a deep connection to their community. In 2010, the sisters acquired the Dumerso washing station in Yirgacheffe, a facility that had stood dormant for years before they brought it back to life in 2013. Since then, they’ve worked to produce world class coffees while creating greater value for the smallholder farmers they support. In Dumerso, farmers cultivate traditional Ethiopian coffee varieties high in the mountains, where cool temperatures and unique growing conditions help shape Yirgacheffe’s celebrated character. This washed lot captures the classic Yirgacheffe profile, bringing together fragrant hibiscus, delicate black tea, sweet citrus, and ripe blueberry in an elegant, expressive cup carried by a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Mahder and Hirut’s impact extends beyond coffee quality. In a region where coffee provides more than 90% of household income, their commitment to supporting local farmers is especially meaningful. As women leading an export business in Ethiopia’s coffee sector, they’re also helping bring greater recognition to the often underappreciated contributions of women throughout the supply chain. We’re proud to continue our partnership with Mahder, celebrating both the distinctive coffees of Dumerso and the women whose knowledge, dedication, and leadership are helping shape the future of Ethiopian coffee.
