The artwork, a depiction of the Capitol building smoking a joint, is a satirical design that encourages the re-thinking of the War on Drugs. A long and costly war that has impacted almost all Americans. This tray is aimed at taking steps towards ending the War on Drugs by creating awareness & hopefully providing a bit more support for the people already in the fight.

So, what exactly are mandatory minimums? 

Mandatory minimum sentences — set by Congress, not judges — require automatic, minimum prison terms for certain crimes. Most mandatory minimum sentences apply to drug offenses, but Congress has also enacted them for other crimes. In the 1980’s Congress enacted mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes, causing federal prison populations to skyrocket.

Facts:

- A new prison was built every 10 days between 1990 and 2005

- We imprison more people than any other country in the world, with 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's prisoners

- In 2012, we spent nearly $60 Billion on prisoners, many of whom were nonviolent offenders who pose no threat to public safety.

- 1 in 28 kids has a parent in prison.

- 1 out of every 7 people in prison is serving a life sentence.

Putting end to practices like Mandatory minimum sentencing for drug related offenses will, without a doubt, decrease our need for more prisons, reduce our overpopulated prisons, and take a step forward in the right direction on Ending the War on Drugs.
