This coffee was sourced at the 2nd national Peruvian coffee competition, “Atipanaku." Since we couldn’t travel to Peru due to the pandemic we participated online. We sampled 20+ coffees before the online auction began. By bidding against other roasters from around the world we won our top 4 coffee selections. This particular lot ranked #2 in the competition and achieved a cupping score of 92 points, making it a Crème de la Crème. These coffee auctions are vital to supporting the growing specialty coffee market. By rewarding producers for growing stellar quality & paying top dollar for it, it motivates nearby farmers to pursue next level quality so they too can earn top dollar for their coffees.
We first purchased coffee from this producer, Fidel Huancas in 2019. When we saw that he was the #2 winner of the coffee auction, we couldn't resist outbidding the other companies to win this coffee!
Fidel Huancas is a young coffee producer who is very dedicated to his craft. He enjoys experimenting with processing to increase quality and impact flavor. That curiosity led to this naturally processed single variety yellow caturra. It was dried on raised african beds for 32 days. In the cup, you will notice notes of pear, dark chocolate, caramel and sweet tropical fruits.
