Anabel Chavez was a crop our founder/green buyer cupped & purchased while on a surf trip to Oaxaca, specifically Salina Cruz. These surf trips typically involve coffee sourcing, as the coffee belt and the surfing belt are pretty much one in the same. Our friend & coffee guru Thomas met him at the surf lodge where he was staying and together they cupped through about 30 samples (all from Mexico, and mostly Oaxaca). The goal was to purchase a high scoring coffee and if possible, purchase coffee from a female producer.
Quality is always the most important thing for us when buying coffee but there was a value add if two coffees cupped great but one was a female producer. In 2019 we decided we’d make it our goal to purchase from more women producers whenever possible. This particular cup stood out on the table right away; bright, vibrant, balanced, and sweet. A more lively cup than most Mexican coffees we’ve had - a chocolaty and vivacious cup, it’s almost sparkling in its sweet vibrancy. Oaxaca, the place of waves, coffee & mezcal. If you haven’t been, we highly recommend it.
